IntoGames are one of the best ways to promote language, academic and social development. The quality time spent with you and your child is invaluable. Here are some quick games that our specialists recommend.
English and Language Arts
Read! Read! Read! And read some more! The more your child hears you read, the more sophisticated his/her understanding of: language, story development, characters, plot, vocabulary, and so much more. Not to mention that he/she will develop the love of reading because his/her idol (you) is reading.
Our local library is a resource that is both enjoyable and affordable! Please consider browsing here. The directors provide extended programs and special activities throughout the summer and school year too. Enjoy!
Sight Words are tricky to learn. Our Early Childhood team is committed to providing fun activities to help promote interest. We use tools such as Heidi Songs, bingo, scavenager hunts, foot prints with words on the prints to hop-along and read just to list a few. If you are an active Pinterest member there are also great ideas there too! Here is a brief list of ideas to help keep it fun while reviewing sight words with your child:
get a box of rice, beans,... cut words out and put in the box and have your child dig, tweeze, etc. for words
give your child a subscription to a magazine and give them a highlighter to search for each word
checkers with labels of the words for that month and each time you move a checker read the word
pictures of food with words on them, have your child prepare you a "word sandwhich", scrambled eggs,...
old puzzles, flip them over so the card board is showing, write the words and pictures
shaving cream with or without a drop of food dye and write the words on a hard surface
tic-tac-toe with words on a set of "O" objects and words on a set of "X" objects (colored tiles work great too!)
modifying old board games such as "Candy Land" or "Connect Four" with labels, etc.
ziplock baggies with words and place a few coins inside to help them sink. Throw them in the tub or pool and have your child "dive for words"
Please share if you have more ideas! We always are looking forward to new input!
Math
Into Math is our curriculum for our LES community. Each child will be sent home with a chapter letter to families with a list of activities and suggestions. Additionally, there are specific activities that target each goal of a lesson taught with your child that you can review and/or extend. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this portion.
Play traditional card games such as War, Uno, Go Fish, Monopoly, Memory, etc. These are fun hands-on experiences that also provide engaging math lessons.
