Our LES Early Childhood Team is dedicated to providing a holistic environment where your child is a valuable member in our community of learners. We are focused on individual needs and work with specialists in our district to help provide many services to help your child advance academically, socially, emotionally, physically and developmentally.
At LES we are committed to implementing our national Common Core standards (CCS) and the holistic nature of a Responsive Classroom. The balancing act between both is achieved with our ongoing communications and practice at home. Surveys, parent volunteers, classroom parents, etc. are all components in creating our community of learners for our students; so, "Thank you in advance for your involvement!"
Clarifying "Interventions"
You may hear the word "interventions" which is our way of saying we intend to provide students with general education services that target your child's specific needs over a period of time (typically 6-8 weeks). This is not a Special Educational service.
Then depending on whether or not your child has the potential to benefit from additional support we work with "specialists" (Reading Specialists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, etc.) in hopes to more accurately target specific skills with which your child needs support; again this is general educational services (for a period of about 6-8 weeks).
Then we meet together to discuss your child's development. At this point we often call for a Student Intervention Team (SIT) Meeting. Here parents are invited along with any specialists involved and your child's classroom teacher. Everyone is working together to clarify what is the best next step for your child. The idea behind this process is to avoid achievement gaps and provide an acceleration in academic/social/emotional needs to help your child gain success.
Often results from SIT Meetings include the following: continue current interventions, adjust interventions to include more or less time with specialists, consider further testing and/or families to discuss with pediatricians, and/or discontinue current services.
At the state level they identify these services as "tiers of support;" if you would like further explanations please search the Massachusetts Department of Education's website.
